Shopify vs Custom E-Commerce for Jamaican Shops: Which Is Right?
Short answer: Choose Shopify (or a similar hosted platform) if you have a small catalogue, sell branded products, want to launch fast and are comfortable paying monthly fees in US dollars. Choose custom e-commerce if you have a large or messy catalogue, pickup-heavy or WhatsApp-heavy ordering, staff who need their own roles, or you want to own the code and avoid stacking app subscriptions.

Both options are legitimate. The mistake is picking one because a YouTube tutorial or a cousin said so. Here's how they compare for the way Jamaican retail actually works.
Quick comparison
| Shopify / hosted | Custom build | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher, custom quoted |
| Monthly cost | Plan fee in US$, plus paid apps and possible transaction fees | Hosting and maintenance only |
| Launch speed | Days to weeks | Weeks |
| Large catalogues (1,000+ items) | Works, but import/cleanup is still on you | Built around your supplier data |
| Pickup-only / WhatsApp ordering | Possible with settings and apps | Designed in from day one |
| JMD + GCT display | Configurable; check currency and tax settings carefully | Exactly how you want it |
| Staff roles and picking workflow | Limited by plan and apps | Custom to your floor |
| Ownership | You rent the platform | You own the code and data |
Fees: the part people underestimate
Hosted platforms charge a monthly plan in US dollars. Then come apps: reviews, wholesale pricing, product options, pickup scheduling, WhatsApp buttons. Each one can add a monthly fee. Payment processing is another layer, and the platform's own payments service is not available in every country, so a Jamaican store may need a third-party gateway, which can carry its own fees. Check the current pricing pages before you commit; they change.
A custom store has no plan fee, but you pay for hosting and for someone to maintain it. Over three years, a big catalogue on a hosted platform with several paid apps can cost more than a custom build. For a 25-product boutique, it usually won't.
JMD, GCT and local checkout
Jamaican shoppers expect to see J$ prices and to know whether GCT is included. On a hosted platform you can usually set store currency and tax, but test the whole checkout yourself: product page, cart, order email and receipt. On a custom build you decide exactly how it reads, e.g. "All prices include GCT".
WhatsApp and pickup-heavy retail
A lot of Jamaican commerce runs on "send me a message" and "I'll come for it". If most of your orders are collected at a counter, or confirmed by WhatsApp before payment, a custom flow can be much simpler for customers: no shipping address fields, pickup location fixed, name + phone + notes, done. We built exactly that for Jacan Foods, where checkout records the St. Thomas depot automatically.
When Shopify is the better choice
- Under about 100 products, mostly your own brand.
- You sell to the diaspora or overseas and ship internationally.
- You want to launch this month and test demand.
- You're comfortable doing day-to-day edits yourself in a polished admin.
When custom is the better choice
- Hundreds or thousands of SKUs from supplier spreadsheets.
- Multipacks, cases and bulk pricing for businesses.
- Staff roles: owner, manager, supervisor, shoppers picking orders.
- Pickup-only or local-only rules that apps make awkward.
- You want to own the platform, not rent it.
A middle path
Some businesses start on a hosted platform to prove demand, then move to custom when apps and fees pile up. Others start with a lean custom catalogue and WhatsApp ordering. Either is fine. What matters is that you own your domain and can export your product data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shopify good for Jamaican businesses?
It can be, especially for small catalogues and brands selling overseas. Check monthly US$ fees, app costs, payment gateway options for Jamaica, and how JMD and GCT appear at checkout.
Is custom e-commerce more expensive than Shopify?
Upfront, usually yes. Over several years, a large catalogue with many paid apps on a hosted platform can cost as much or more than a custom build with simple hosting.
Can I do pickup-only on Shopify?
Generally yes, using local pickup settings and sometimes apps. A custom build can remove address fields entirely and fix the pickup location, which is simpler for customers.
Who owns my store if it is custom built?
With a proper contract, you do: the code, the data and the domain. Get that in writing before the build starts.
