How to Choose a Web Designer in Jamaica for Your Small Business
Short answer: Pick the designer whose live, working sites look like what you need, who puts the domain in your name, gives a fixed written scope and delivery date, builds for phones and WhatsApp first, and tells you the 12-month total cost. Awards and "#1 in Jamaica" claims matter far less than those five things.
Quick answer
- Speed: most sites launch in days, not months
- Anywhere: we work with businesses worldwide

There are plenty of web designers in Jamaica, from solo freelancers to agencies, plus overseas providers who serve Jamaican clients. Prices overlap a lot (see our Jamaica website cost guide). Here's how to tell them apart.
The 10-point checklist
- Live portfolio, not mockups. Ask for links to real sites you can open on your phone right now. Screenshots and Dribbble shots don't prove anything works.
- Similar businesses. A great restaurant site doesn't mean they can build a 2,000-product store. Match their work to your need.
- Domain in your name. Non-negotiable. If you part ways, you keep your address and your Google links.
- Written scope. Pages, features, who writes text, who supplies photos, how many revisions.
- Delivery date in writing. "Two to six weeks" is not a date.
- Mobile and speed. Test their sites on mobile data. Slow sites lose customers (here's why).
- WhatsApp and click-to-call. For most Jamaican businesses, a message or call is the conversion.
- Google setup. Google Business Profile, matching name/address/phone, basic SEO on each page.
- 12-month total. Build + domain + hosting + maintenance. Cheap builds with locked hosting plans add up.
- What happens after launch. Who do you call when something breaks, and what does a small change cost?
Questions to ask on the first call
- "Can you show me two live sites like mine?"
- "Who owns the domain, hosting account and code?"
- "What exactly is included, and what costs extra?"
- "Will prices show in J$ and is GCT handled?" (for stores)
- "Can I edit prices and photos myself?"
- "What's your backup plan if the site gets hacked?"
Red flags
- No live links, only screenshots.
- Pressure to pay 100% upfront for a big project.
- Fake-looking reviews, or reviews you can't trace to a real business.
- "Guaranteed #1 on Google." Nobody can guarantee that.
- Vague answers about ownership.
Local vs overseas designer
A local designer understands parishes, JMD pricing and how people actually buy here. An overseas provider may be cheaper or faster for simple sites. What matters more is whether they understand WhatsApp-first customers, pickup, mobile data and GCT. For an online store, read Shopify vs custom e-commerce in Jamaica first so you know which kind of designer you need.
Where Market Street fits (honestly)
We're a small studio, not the biggest agency on the island. We do two kinds of work:
- Premium service websites, quoted per project and delivered fast, with click-to-call, WhatsApp and Google basics.
- Custom quoted builds: e-commerce, large catalogues, staff back offices and practical AI tools.
Live work you can check yourself: HowJamaica (case study) and Jacan Foods (case study). If we're not the right fit, we'll say so.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a web designer cost in Jamaica?
Published Jamaican prices in 2026 start around J$8,000 for a simple landing page and run past J$100,000 for larger sites. E-commerce and custom systems are quoted separately.
Should the web designer own my domain?
No. Register the domain in your own name and give the designer access. That protects your web address if you change providers.
Is it better to hire a local Jamaican web designer?
Not automatically. Choose whoever has live sites like yours and understands Jamaican buying habits: WhatsApp, pickup, mobile data and JMD pricing.
What should a small business website include?
Clear services, location, a big call and WhatsApp button, real photos, reviews you can verify, and a Google Business Profile connected to the site.
